Beginning in 1921 when the state granted the Catholic home Bureau the legal authority to process adoptions, Catholic Charities, with the help of social workers and priest chaplains; notably Rev. Roger J. Coughlin, oversaw the placement of children. They worked closely with the Sisters to assure a secure and happy future for all the children at St. Vincent's Orphanage.

When St. Vincent's Infant Hospital and Asylum closed in 1972, Catholic Charities tradition for caring for birth parents, children and adoptive families did not end. It continues to this day in the work of Adoption/Maternity Department of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago.
Catholic Charities still receive many request from adoptee about their birth mothers. Their Adoption Department is glad to assist in this process, working as an intermediary between adoptee and their birth parents. Catholic Charities maintains a registry of members of the adoption circle who make inquires.
